Alfalfa Herb (Lucerne)
Latin name: (Genus) Medicago; (Species) M. sativa.
Historically Alfalfa has been used in Chinese herbal medicine to treat a range of conditions relating to kidney and urinary problems. It has been used primarily as a diuretic and energy boosting tonic.
Traditionally Alfalfa has been used to ease symptoms of arthritis, anxiety, mild depression and premenstrual mood swings, as a supplementary treatment for alcohol and drug addiction, and as a general ‘feel good’ tonic.
Other uses for which herbalists recommend Alfalfa today include treating auto-immune disorder, easing arthritis, cleansing the blood, lowering cholesterol and easing the symptoms of whooping cough.
Alfalfa is also said to reduce blood sugar levels, and is therefore indicated in the treatment of diabetes.
