Raspberry Leaf

Rubus idaeus, the scientific name for the European Raspberry, is a perennial flowering plant in the rose family native to Europe and northern Asia, and is a close relative of Rubus strigosus, otherwise known as the American Raspberry, which can be found in most parts of North America.

Raspberry Leaf: Latin name: (Genus) Rubus; (Species) idaeus.

Traditional lore cites Raspberry Leaf as a potent aid in helping women throughout the course of their pregnancy, and boasts a long history of use by women in Europe and North America as a uterine relaxant and tonic, as well as for healthy menstruation, the prevention of miscarriage, relief from morning sickness and to help prepare the womb for labour.

Traditional use of Raspberry Leaf by women of the Cherokee, Mohawk and Iroquois tribes is well documented.

Raspberry Leaf is also indicated as a tonic in childbirth by the The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia (1996).

Other benefits attributed to Raspberry Leaf are in the prevention of haemorrhage and the treatment of cataracts and diabetes, and due to the plant being rich in Vitamins C and E, as well as antioxidants, it is also recognised by herbalists today for its ability to scavenge free radicals.
