The fundamental role of Carotenoids to good health and human biochemistry cannot be overstated and can be best exemplified by Beta Carotene, the best-known carotenoid.
Beta Carotene is a source of Vitamin A. But whereas Vitamin A itself can be problematic when taken as a supplement, Beta Carotene is converted to Vitamin A within the body as required and our bodies self-regulate its conversion as needed for its contribution to the maintenance of normal skin, mucous membranes, vision, and the normal function of the immune system. It also has a role in the process of cell specialisation.
In nature, Carotenoids do not exist in isolation, but in a complex with each other. For example, Carrots are a natural source of Beta Carotene, Lutein & Zeaxanthin whereas Astaxanthin is found with Beta Carotene in Algae, Yeasts and Wild Salmon (providing salmon’s vivid red colour) whilst Lyopene provides the red colour of Tomatoes along with Beta Carotene, Lutein & Zeaxanthin
