Hodmedod's are a Suffolk-based company with a mission to revive the use of British-grown legumes — crops that were staples of British agriculture for centuries before the import of commodity soya and lentils displaced them. Their Vaal Dhal is a South African-inspired dish built on 45% British organic fava beans (broad beans, grown in Suffolk) in a spiced tomato sauce with herbs and rapeseed oil.
Fava beans are the original British pulse — they've been grown in this climate for at least 5,000 years, require minimal inputs to grow and fix nitrogen into the soil rather than depleting it. By using British-grown favas, Hodmedod's are creating a food system argument as well as a delicious tin of dhal.
The flavour is earthy, warming and properly spiced — this is genuine dhal rather than a mildly seasoned bean tin.
Certified organic. Vegan. UK-grown beans.
Serving suggestion: On rice, with flatbreads, as a side with roasted vegetables, or eaten straight from the tin with a fried egg on top.
